Now I remember why I miss you so much.
It's 7 right now right here.
Maybe that's why I have taken a moment to
reconnect with one whom I have treasured
but not told her so in a very very long "time."

Ellen, I’ve been thinking about your recent article on your blog “Would Jesus be an Activist” and others you’ve written and can’t go without sharing my two-cents. Each time I read your posts, I find myself wanting to jump up and shout, “YEAH – that’s what I’m talking about!” You hit the nail on the head every time. Your willingness to be transparent, honest and humble by sharing the beauty that comes from laying yourself bare before the Lord, and letting Him work in your heart (I’m thinking particularly about the writing you did after your retreat some months back, as well as the time in your garage and now by the pool…) is amazing! You are one of the truest examples I’ve seen of what it means to be Christ-like. You are an inspiration to me and I’m sure countless others. I find myself wishing I’d known you better growing up. I was at a different place then – believing I was a Christian, but not understanding the person of Jesus and how much He loves me. I was caught up in the place of not feeling accepted or “perfect” enough, too, and still find myself there at times…but Jesus! When we come to the place of accepting ourselves for who God created us to be by receiving His love, mercy and acceptance, then we can truly accept others where they are at (I don’t think holding a sign with baby body parts would be the way to express that message). It’s a process that you capture and express so well in your writings – raw, honest, and true. I find myself excited to read the next article. I am so glad that you are a pastor’s wife! I believe that your example is a tool that God is using to truly set people free. Thank you!

Hi Ellen, I looked at some of your blogs here after getting "caught" once more on facebook. If I'm there, it's usually because I was lured there. :) I love your blogs! These two about the political activism and abortion thing have really made me think. I'm so thankful that my children are alive today. One of them was saved from abortion on the day of the appointment by the hand of God. Not political activists with signs, just God whispering quietly in a birthmother's ear to think about the choice she was making. (Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind....and after the fire came a gentle whisper.) Thank you, Jesus!!! Everything you have said is right on. Our job is to show God's love in a dark world. That task is much harder than holding up signs and writing to congressmen. Is it wrong to be politically active? I don't think so, but I think it must be a calling just like other callings. We can't truly be used by God to change the world if we don't truly love the people in the world. Even those who are writing bad legislation and making bad choices that hurt all of us. When we become angry and judgemental towards the world, it's over. Turn out the lights. Wow, that's so hard sometimes. I need to pray for God to increase my love and to help me to remember that He is in control.

My Marvelously Talent Daughter Ellen. I liked the idea in the sign for Happy Valley Rd. It said EXIT ONLY. It must mean that once you are there you can not leave. So I'm going to Exit here at Happy Valley and I plan on staying.

Love you my, Ellen Smellen' Watermelon! I've always had descriptive name for all my kids.

I think in this day and age Jesus would be labeled a religeous fanatic.Did not have a job ,a place to lay his head preached things that in the flesh no one understood .Had a cult following ect,ect...
I dont think he would be a memeber of the Tea Party ,but I dont think he would condemn them.He would however condemn Nut Case 60 miles from my home Fred Phelps , truly evil.As you had referred to in your post on the anti abortion activist with grotesque signs in front of your children ...Strongly misguided ? yes ..are their hearts in the right place ..they might be .But again I would rather more pour their heart and soul into the crisis pregnancy centers to show the love of Christ and options available to the gals in crisis .Jesus in the flesh..holding their hand through the whole process .
Those who put you down and said you are not a Pastors wife!! ..Ellen let me at them !! My activism is risin UP!!You my lady are the dearest sweetest testament to The Love of Christ I have met here on this earth...Anyone to think or say different Do not know you and are being Judgemental and hateful....the type of stuff in the Church that needs cleansed!!Love you Ellen...as I right this I am hearing Ted Stevens was in a plane crash .Lord be with him and his family..Love you much ~~ Claudia

Thank You Ellen! I love it when a writer can help others see beyond the pomp and decadence and selfishness of modern Christianity ... to lift the veil so that strangers could peer into the reality that everywhere there are humble people quietly pouring out their life to their King and neighbors.
Unfortunately, its the loud idiots who know a few bible verses that get the most attention. But for every misaligned "christian" serving their own purposes there are hundreds of meek servants working in and with the brokenness of this world ... truly being the church Jesus wants us to be.

For years I had an issue with Matthew 7 and some of Jesus' statements. But after struggling with it for a while and reading Eugene Peterson translation in The Message, I get it. On this issue of social action in Jesus' name, but not with Jesus' spirit, Jesus said, "I can see it now—at the Final Judgment thousands strutting up to me and saying, 'Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.' And do you know what I am going to say? 'You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don't impress me one bit. You're out of here.'

I think Jesus' opinion is pretty clear. Ellen, right on!
